Playing Metal Gear Solid 4

I enjoyed it mostly, definitely alot of cut-scenes but didn't mind too much since I knew that going in. Kinda wish I could play MGS1 I did try it but only got up to the Gray Fox fight, the controls where just too old for me get into, so I did at least get to the very first bit of Shadow Moses feel familiar.

Really enjoyed the gameplay that all felt good.

Glad you liked it :D.  I'm an MGS fan for a reason, always such great games, cut-scenes regardless (I tend to enjoy the stories/cut-scenes as well, but it's the gameplay that really draws me in).

It's a shame that it's very unlikely at this point that we will see a Remake of MGS1 using the Fox Engine. MGS will live on in Pachinko machines though...

Still playing HoI4 here, and still loving it.  Doing a little bit of modding of the naval side of things (it's crazy easy to do, very well set up for it).  Got a few "early in game's life release quirks" though, so like Stellaris and Gal Civ III, want to give it a few months before reviewing it, to get an idea of where it's going to go first.

That's the thing - modding 'these days' is easy. If it has Steam Workshop, it's even easier (pretty much click of a button). I don't know why people perceive it to be difficult (and then avoid it). Everyone should be modding their games, particularly if there's a good modding community behind the game.

The only spanner in all that is when you might be locked out of other things like GTAV online or achievements. Not great when developers are antagonistic towards a modding scene.

I don't mind so much that modding tends to lock out achievements (although to give Paradox some credit, mods that only change the visuals or the UI don't affect achievements or online), as there's still a view amongst many that achievements are used as an indication of comparative achievement with the game (something I don't personally roll with, and if I made a game I'd have achievements achievable with mods, but it's a view I can understand).  At least with PDS games as long as everyone has the same mod (same checksum) they can still play online.

yeah PDS it's cool and set out quite specifically when you start a game. I was thinking more of Fallout 4 recently which some mods are almost essential like the unofficial patch but that still gets your game tag as "modded" even that one alone.

Games that support mods have custom servers that have mods. I'm pretty sure you still get achievements if you play Fallout 4 or Skyrim with mods. The mods I installed for Skyrim made the game far more difficult (into a survivalist game) - the rest were visual enhancements or realism mods (eg. travel by horse and cart in real time instead of fast travel). Assetto Corsa I have mods installed and still get achievements (not that I give a shit about them). Again, has custom servers for modded tracks/cars. Arma has custom servers with mods as well. Euro Truck Simulator has mods and you still get achievements... and the list goes on and on.

At the end of day, I'd prefer mods over achievements any day. Achievements are fake digital awards you get for achieving crappy things. Mods are there to enhance/extend and make the game even better than it was.

It's like comparing shit and gold.

Mods also help to extend a games life. Take for example Project Reality - a Battlefield 2 mod. Still regularly played on servers around the world 10 years later.

Bethesda have changed things up with Fallout 4, your save game gets flagged if it detects any mods. As much as Skyrim was great with mods, a game is even better if you don't have to muck around with them to improve/fix things.
I realized after awhile I was having to spend more time troubleshooting mods than playing in Skyrim.

Really? I had somewhere around 90 mods installed and had no problems at all. The only hurdle I had with that game is it was my first game I ever modded so was a little bit of a learning curve to begin with.

I actually had more problems on the vanilla PS3 version which became unplayable because of the memory leak problem.

With Assetto Corsa - probably over 100 mods installed now and no problems whatsoever.

Maybe I just got unlucky but if something is wrong with the masterlist with loads of mods but 1 is out, the game will crash on start which is what happened to me. Had to go through each one. LOOT wasn't there at the time which makes things a bit easier now though.

Yeah, well as I was saying modding has become a lot easier. Things like LOOT for load order and Nexus Mod Manager for managing your mods make things far less complicated.

But you do need to read up on it before diving into it. And you do need to read every mod description to see if there are conflicts with other mods you have installed. Some mods require other mods too eg. SKSE.

Modding does add another lay of complexity as well as another potential level of conflicts and bugs onto anything, so it's almost impossible for it to not, on average, make things less stable.  I've had the same experience as Smokey with past games, and it the experience can depend a lot on the game and the mods chosen (I forget which, but I modded up an RPG on PC with one or two popular mods that should have worked, but had all sorts of issues).  For me, it's better to play vanilla unless it's a game I'm going to play for hundreds and hundreds of hours, so the investment in getting a feel for the mod side of things pays off.

Seems like I've had good luck I guess then. Easily be over 200 mods I've installed all up (on different games) and not had any issues. Haven't had any real problem with gaming on PC in general (yet).

With that aside - still playing a lot of RaceRoom. Just scraping top 10's in the latest comps... but usually the next time I look I'll be knocked out of it and have to go at it again.
