HTC RE Vive

Official Site

HTC'S VR VISION
FINALLY, THE FUTURE

Imagine standing on the bridge of a starship rocketing across the galaxy, or strolling through the streets of ancient Rome, or shrinking down to subatomic size and watching molecules collide. Now Re-imagine.

HTC’s Vive headset, powered by SteamVR, pulls those virtual worlds off your computer screen and into your home. You’ll experience sights and sounds vivid and lifelike enough to transport you to another place, another time—whole new realities with limitless possibilities.

HTC + Valve

+ Valve

The Vive headset was developed in conjunction with Valve, creators of such ground-breaking games as Portal and Half-Life. HTC manufactures some of the finest consumer electronics on the planet and Valve is an unrivaled architect of virtual worlds, so you know the collaboration is something special. Vive is powered by Valve’s SteamVR so plenty of games that take advantage of its capabilities will soon be available on the Steam service.

Features
THE VISUALS
A 1,200 by 1,080 pixel screen in front of each eye, with refresh rates of a blistering 90 frames per second, displays photorealistic imagery that fills your field of vision in all directions, eliminating the jitter common to previous VR technologies and transporting you to another world.

THE AUDIO
Plug your favorite set of headphones into a jack located on the side of the Developer Edition headset.

TRACKING AND ROOM SCALE
A gyrosensor, accelerometer, and laser position sensor combine to precisely track the rotation of your head on both axes to an accuracy of 1/10th of a degree, allowing you to look around the virtual environment naturally. Couple the headset with a pair of Steam VR base stations to track your physical location (in spaces up to 15 feet by 15 feet) – get up and walk around inisde the virtual world!

CUSTOM GAME CONTROLLER
Ergonomic VR game controllers in each hand allow you to use virtual objects and interact with the virtual world. The position of each controller is tracked in space, allowing developers to simulate a wide range of activities and interactions.

I reckon we'll be looking at $400-$500... that's my estimate. If they make it any dearer it'll become too exclusive or unaffordable for most. I'm not really looking forward to having a big thing on my head along with headphones... I wonder how heavy it'll become after a good gaming session?

if it was inexpensive i'd grab it just to fool about with, personally i didn't enjoy the oculus so can't picture liking this for long periods.

Yeah - I think I'd prefer to actually try it before I get one... head tracking will be good enough for me, I think I'd be satisfied enough just with that.

Looks like VR's definitely getting a decent shot in the arm - I just hope that there's some reasonably consistent standards in terms of however they code for the displays and the controllers, so that devs aren't busy trying to arm-wrestle their games onto twenty different platforms.  Cheers for the news Spec :).  I wonder which big VR company will go 'retail' first?

have any of you tried the google cardboard or even the plastic vr glasses you use with your smartphone ?  one of the guys here has them both, he also made his own from scratch as well, pretty good for something different.

I suspect my phone's a bit old for that (although not for much longer) - when I get a new phone I'll investigate them.  Have you given them a go?  I just have the feeling that it's something that'd benefit (both in terms of VR effect and ergonomics) from something that's a bit more dedicated.

yeah i've tried all of his VR glasses, work incredibly well.  they're certainly not in the league of the oculus etc, but they aren't perfect either. the phone setup is full 3D with head tracking, really weird walking around the room, flying a hang glider or riding in a train etc.

Bought myself a Corsair K70 cherry mx red mechanical keyboard today :) very happy so far. Decided to get the normal red backlit keys instead of the new rgb ones to save an extra $50-70

Still looks awesome and it will make my gf happy, she hated my old razer keyboard which had loud clicky switches which I didnt mind for writing documents

Yeah browns are in between blues and reds... I think there's also blacks which are the quietest.

Had another bash at Elite Dangerous... at first I couldn't really get into the swing of it, docking from station to station to find some good jobs or runs to do. Was starting to annoy me a little but then it started to finally pick up. You really need a hell of a lot of patience in this game, I don't usually have that so I've been pushing myself to deal with it until I understand the game better. I'm on my way to the Wangal system in the process to meet up with DaMorgs (from NextGG) but that's a hundred or so light years away so it'll take a shitload of jumps, plus I'm doing jobs along the way which isn't helping as I'm getting sidetracked. I think by the time I get there, I should be a pro. lol.

Also got my first kill, some dude pulled me out of super cruise so I had no option but to take him on. Got the bounty for that as well because he was wanted.

I don't really know what to say about the game... it was really boring at first but it's slowly growing on me and I reckon once I get to where DaMorgs and the others are, that's when the game will come to life as I'll be able to get involved in massive battles.

Nice one Clowny :).  I read somewhere that it's a slow starter but sucks you in once you've got into it, sounds like you're on the right track B).

Steam Universe page has been filled with info

PC gaming is expanding

This November, we're bringing everything that makes the PC great—the best games, the biggest communities, and the most exciting technologies—to new destinations.

Steam Controller
The Steam Controller lets you play your entire collection of Steam games on your TV—even the ones designed without controller support in mind. Featuring dual trackpads, HD haptic feedback, dual-stage triggers, back grip buttons, and fully customizable control schemes, the Steam Controller offers a new level of precise control. Find your favorite mappings in the Steam Community, or create and share your own.

Steam Link
Bring your existing collection of PC games with you to the living room. Simply connect Steam Link to your TV and home network and access your full library of games and the complete Steam catalog, all from the best seat in the house.

Steam Machines
Thousands of games, millions of gamers. Everything you love about Steam is coming to a powerful new family of entertainment devices. Steam Machines Sale Page

SteamVR
Introducing SteamVR, a full-featured, 360° room-scale VR experience. Available in partnership with HTC spring 2015, the Vive Developer Edition is a development kit that includes a headset, two single-handed controllers, and a system that tracks them all in the same absolute space. Experience high-end VR paired with everything you love about Steam.

It most definitely is expanding. Always been interested in the steam controller but its 100% one of those things I'd have to try first before seriously considering buying just to see how I get along with the touch pads. Steam Link doesn't interest me in the slightest currently. Steam Machines again no interest but I am not their target market. SteamVR not much interest in either I'd need to try it and I doubt it will reach a price I'd be able to justify getting it any-time soon.
