Every Engram I've gotten over the last few days has given me crap and it's going to be ages before I can afford to buy anything.

It took me two days to have enough marks from spamming the Crucible since the week ended the morning after I started to buy two pieces from the FWC, should have enough tonight to buy a third piece and luckily had enough to buy an exotic from Xur so I should be fully kitted out tonight but now I need to farm upgrade materials.

Trying to figure out if it worth trying to replace and grind all the new updated gear seeing as in a few months when the next expansion comes out it will be all obsolete and I'll have to do it all over again.

Slow grind might be alright if you're not in a rush to complete the Crota raid/higher level activities and still want to play Destiny. I managed to pick up at least 4-5 pieces of free new legendary gear plus weapons for each of my characters from engrams and reputation ranking, and Eris' Urn mission is guaranteed to reward a new set of legendary gloves if you complete the whole quest as well.

The Cryptarch and Faction rankings seem to be more generous with handing out legendary weapons and gear now too.

Good points Live.  I havent bought new gear (apart from upgrades and engrams from Xur), just relied on nightfall and herioc drops and leg engrams.  This meant I could burn marks on materials over grinding for them.   I did have to, and still need to, grind for glimmer, but I just tend to stick the glimmer thingos on when doing daily or weekly stuff and doing bounties.

Edit: If you were one of the many stuck at level 29, buying the new vanguard armour meant a quick path to 30 so a lot of people stuck at 29 went buy over find :)

A lot of the grinding depends on how many characters you have and how much of a rush your are in to get them 31/32.

Crota's raid is my turn to be lucky only week two already have the set of raid gear from normal for my titan after the VoG that took me like 10 weeks level 32 here I come.

Finally got a Legendary Engram since the new expansion and it was for the fucking Hunter. Fuck this game.
