Hi,

So I finally got internet set up at my house last night and plugged in cod, load it up and low and behold i've got a strict NAT type. It's stopping me from connecting to people, and giving me red bar in pretty much ANY game, it's ruining the experience of hopping on after work for a few fuck around games with the FV lads - I need help!

• Modem/Router: Billion 7800NL (brand new)
  
• Internet: ADSL+2 Internode (13down/2up)
  
• All cords are brand new and never used before, NOT ebay specials
  
• There is only 1 ethernet cord out of the router, that is to my ps3 (no other devices connected)
  
• My speeds on the ps3 are brilliant and ping is very low as i'm next door to the tower
  
• I should be able to host matches with ease, but i'm stuck on strict NAT

What are peoples best guides to fixing this? I've tried the following:

• DMZ to the IP that my PS3 is running on (no change)
  
• Set DNS and secondary DNS to numbers given by some youTube video (only slowed my connection to ps3 by around 4mb, don't know why)
  
• I try to set a high IP address so i can run a static IP address but it doesn't ever connect when I do that, only connects on an IP address of it's choosing

I'm really at the end of my patience with this, i've worked on cars my whole life and am quite methodical about canceling out anything that could be wrong step by step, yet i'm still having issues

I'll be going home from work tonight and sitting there trying to work it all out, but would prefer some pro advice here as i think i'm out of options, i've looked at so many tutorials online and none are working for me.

1) I can't set another IP address for some reason, when i set it as per the instructions it doesn't connect to the net
2) in the past when i've DMZ'd the Ip it hasn't made any difference to my NAT type, it is still showing as strict in cod

Really odd...can you temporarily borrow a router from a friend to see if that affects your connection?

i've had that issue with my ps3 when setting a static ip, inability to connect to the internet.

only way i've gotten around that is to either forward ports or to totally disable the firewall on the modem.  if you look in the back of your game manuals they'll tell you what ports to forward for online play (can differ from game to game).

dude i've told you, Billion routers come with firewall disabled from factory.

My issue is ports and NAT types and their opening.

tonight i'm going to try setting a new IP, but this time i'll keep it lower, of that works i'll DMZ that address then try open the ports recommended in the above link.

problem is i opened some ports last night and it just slowed me right down lol

your NAT is determined by what restrictions your firewall places on incoming & outgoing traffic.  if you have a 'strict NAT' your firewall is blocking almost all ports, therefore it is on you tard.

that link i gave you tells you step by step how to open the ports on your firewall for your modem.

rhys you don't need a static ip on your ps3 to do a port forward.  you only need a static ip for dmz which isn't working for you.

so i'm opening all the ports suggested for the Ip that my PS3 is running?

should i set up the ps3 or the ports first?

Hit the ports first, and see how they go, as unless you specify which IP it's going to, it'll open up all those ports for everything on the system.  After that, try the IP address - check your router documentation, as some modem/routers have different allowable ranges for these things. Good luck .

yeah i'm hoping i'm just trying too high, so i'll set all ports for the router as a whole (i assume i just enter the routers IP address where it asks, or won't it ask for an IP address at all??) then save, should i restart my modem after any changes or just clicking 'save' should do it?

give that a crack, then worry about a static IP

forget about the static IP & don't change anything on your ps3.  just open the suggested ports on port forward for cod & click 'save', your modem should reboot & you should have either an open or moderate NAT next time you play.

with the 7800NL i think you have to click save, then click restart manually.

Older versions of the router had a 'save config' button as well, this model doesnt.

but yes, i'll do that first before anything tonight, cheers.

Not sure why you would need to do all this porting business if you set up your DMZ properly...

i don't know how you couldn't set up a DMZ properly? You enter in the IP address of the ps3, you then select time period 'always on', you then select apply, restart. done.

still doesn't change my connection in cod.


i've done DMZ before at other houses and it has worked, i stayed a strict NAT type, but i could connect to everyone. My problem is that being strict i get kicked from parties mid game etc. incredibly frustrating

with your new net you'd be a handy host too if we can get it right.

I don't doubt that you have not put the right IP address in, but obviously the router is not opening all ports to that address... On my linksys router DMZ works perfectly.

Have you updated the firmware? I tried a quick google search and there are a few hits on the whilpool forums with people having the same problem on the PS3. Unfortunately no fixes, but maybe this link might help? http://forums.whirlp...archive/1816975

lol i know, this is why i'm trying so bloody hard to get it right!! it's so fast compared to the ADSL+2 i was using back in SA.

looks like i need to set up a dedicated IP from the router for the device first, this is why it hasn't been allowing me i think, looks like the billion runs slightly different to other routers

Nice work!  Networking's a bit like that - every different bit of tech works a little or a lot differently.  And then they wonder why stuff falls over....  Good luck .

lol, ok... so i've just actioned the following:

Static IP address set as 192.168.1.10
DMZ opened to Static IP address 192.168.1.10
Ports opened for blops2 on the whole router, no IP address set

and guess what.... still a strict NAT type.

seriously over this, i've literally got everything set 100% correct, what the fuck is the deal. i'm getting stupid speeds on my test on the ps3, just can't get rid of the strict in cod


I can't work out how to do the link (http://www.billion.u...p-to-a-computer) i posted just above, the settings on the router have changed and there is no place mentioning DHCP server?
