Call of Duty: Ghosts was finally unveiled along with the Xbox One reveal yesterday. In its brief presentation towards the end of the Xbox Event, we were able to get a behind the scenes look at how Ghosts was developed, see actual gameplay and multiplayer trailers/videos as well as listen to more information about the game confirmed by the Activision CEO, Eric Hirshberg himself.

For those who haven't seen it (or would like to watch it again), here is the Call of Duty: Ghosts Reveal from the Xbox presentation:

Release Date: November 5th, 2013 (for current generation consoles; coming soon to next-gen).

Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox 360®, PlayStation® 4, PlayStation® 3, and PC.

Official Description:
"The franchise that has defined a generation of gaming is set to raise the bar once again with the all-new Call of Duty®: Ghosts. Published by Activision and developed by Infinity Ward, the studio that created the original Call of Duty and the critically-acclaimed Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® series, Call of Duty: Ghosts ushers in the next generation of the franchise, delivering a riveting all-new gameplay experience built on an entirely new story, setting and cast, all powered by a new next-generation Call of Duty engine".

So far, it has been revealed and confirmed that:

Campaign
  • Running on a brand new, next-generation Call of Duty engine.
  • Ghosts delivers an all-new story, all-new characters, and an all-new Call of Duty world.
  • There’s a cast of characters that “you will feel emotionally attached too”
  • Story begins with a mass event – America’s crippled – government’s in disarray, military forces crippled
  • We, as players, fight back against the superior forces
  • Ghosts are a super elite fighting force
  • Addition to squad: Dogs – it’s a squad member; you care about the dog’s actions;
  • Takes place in America a few years from now.
  • A lot of battles and destruction have taken place already.
  • Things don’t look good for America.
  • The “Ghosts Team”, no one knows who they are or where they came from.
  • Ghosts are salvation & hope.
  • Brothers grew up in this environment, idolize the Ghosts team. Were born shortly after event.
  • Story begins were brothers meet the Ghosts team.
  • Sub-brand clarified, start of new “story-arc”. NOT in MW or Black Ops universe, its own universe.
  • No relation to Ghost in Modern Warfare.

New Engine Features
  • Next-generation weapons, never seen before in Call of Duty game
  • Running quickly – hit a wall – get a “boom” effect before jumping over it. Animation of jumping over it is also brand new
  • Brand new ‘lean’ feature – can lean out and see what’s happening
  • New sliding feature
  • Fluid dynamics
  • Interactive smoke
  • New AI system – fish move out of the way when you go close to them
  • Brand new lighting tech – “level makes you feel like you are there”

Multiplayer
  • Revamped Multiplayer completely
  • Dynamic Maps (earth quakes, flooding, player driven actions, doors, explosive traps)
  • Character Customization – choose heads, bodies, helmet, and gear

Other
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts DLC launches first on Xbox LIVE (timed exclusive)

[Update]: In an interview with GamesBeat, Activision’s CEO, Eric Hirshberg, has confirmed that Call of Duty: Ghosts will be integrated with the Kinect 2.0 voice command feature as well. This marks a first for the franchise as Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 could only work with Kinect's camera to live stream – not with the voice commands.

"I made a passing comment that you’re going to see voice integration, voice commands via Kinect, which is something that we haven’t done in the past with Call of Duty. We think the improvements to Kinect really excite us because of the level of responsiveness and detail. I thought that the demo they did with the voice commands on television, the instant changing between games and music, was really compelling. You’ll see more of this coming from us as we get closer to the launch".

What do you think of the new Call of Duty so far?

The addition of the dog in the team certainly makes things seem much more interesting (at least in the Single Player Campaign). And the fact that Ghosts will be running on a brand new next-gen engine in an all-new Call of Duty universe hopefully means that this will be a fresh and exciting new step for the franchise.

Its nice to know they finally realised they needed a new engine but the engine already looks outdated and is not much of an improvement over current engine. The engine features they showed off and were so proud of were laughable to be honest. I'm not talking about the CoD Gameplay but the engine itself and its "new next gen features"

Yeah graphics aren't everything, but a good engine affects the entire game not just graphics. Made me laugh when they were like "FISH GET OUT OF YOUR WAY NOW WHEN YOU GET CLOSE TO THEM!!"

I was just hoping they'd bring something really new with next-gen, I wanted to give the next CoD a go, I will keep my eye on this and see if actually does deliver or will it be just like the current gen CoD?

Interesting to see CoD take a new direction, and push further into the fictional side of things - will give it a try I'm sure.  I\ll think of my dog as Charlie the Wonder Dog :D.

It does look kinda interesting, but I could have done without the 'murican "LOOK HOW AWESOME THIS IS!" marketing approach.

I'm sooo looking forward to the fish!, I really wanted to go to E3 this year. and ask about the fish :(

I wonder if, when CoD does eventually fade away, we can say something like "so long and thanks for all the fish?"

Yeah, I'd like it to change the next gen. I don't want to have another 7 or so years of its dominance. People need to move onto something new.

Totally agree - by all means it should stay a strong franchise, but it'd be great if there was something else come along.  There's a significant 'fad factor' to CoD - not in the guys that play it here of course, but in the fact it sells head-and-shoulders above other games that are just as good, because it's hit that critical mass in popularity.  These things can change pretty quick, when they do, although I suspect it won't be Ghosts that changes things.

Yeah, I'm hoping something will come along and knock it off its perch. It usually happens every console cycle anyway. Xbox it was Halo, then came COD4 on the 360. Unsure what PS2 had, online wasn't that popular on that platform. We'll see... fingers crossed it's not another COD like game and something a bit smarter/cleverer. I think that's why it did so well though - was so easy to pick up and play and didn't require any skill whatsoever.

SOCOM was huge online on PS2 - had some seriously large numbers at its peak - but the PS2 never had anything quite that dominated like CoD does now - maybe the GTA games?  But overall I think it (and the PSOne) were more balanced, which is personally the way I like it. Reckon it's the advent of social media and the like that's helped create the 'huge' games this gen.
