Ouch, good luck Cal, hope it treats you a little better!  Worst case scenario, you'll have a funky mug?

Not mine, the Mrs (Raven) got it. I get the code for the PS store to download it on my PS4 ;) .... but she keeps the funky mug.

We'll see how we fair, Arrr.

I'm hoping that maybe it is just the main story missions that reuse the bad mission design and the side stuff becomes better. But damn that frame rate, it's kinda unplayable.

mmm I might skip this one or wait for it to go on sale considerably I think. The game had potential but it seems Ubisoft have lost themselves in their own beautiful world (albeit at 10 fps :P)

AC2 was a much better game than AC1, not sure how well it will have aged though.  I'm still a fan of the series, although I haven't played AC3 yet (it's likely my next SP game on the list), and I heard that swayed a few opinions away from it.

OK. I've put some more time into AC4 and I think I'm starting to think most reviews are accurate. It seems the main story missions rely a lot on the traditional AC mission structures (ie. chases, tailing etc.) Which were never very good in past games nor are they here. Now that I'm further into it and the world has opened up a bit more I'm not forced to so as many main mission back to back, so that's good.

As for the framerate, it seems outside of cities it runs quite well. Once in a city that's when the framerate can become an issue. Havana is the worst I've seen so far but it seems smaller cities have less of a frame drop off (which makes sense) so they are a lot more fun to navigate.

While they still have the bad and unforgiving mission design of past games (I failed one mission in the same spot 5 times because Ed would not obey my inputs), they are mixed in with much more open and emergent missions (infiltrating compounds etc.)

It seems my first impressions (see above) were some what skewed as the beginning of the game rely heavily on the traditional AC mission design. Once it opens up it gets better, but the bad missions are still sprinkled in there.

I would have to say my first recommendation still stands, if you really want to play this game, maybe wait till PS4, mainly because it's prettier and won't have framerate problems.

Basically AC4 is a mixed bag.

Just did a mission that took me 5 tries because of the bad design. The only reason I was able to finish it was because the AI glitched out. ffs.

It's occurred to me that Kenway kinda looks like Heath Ledger.

Just started getting into AC IV this week, and only a couple of hours in yet, so haven't really opened anything up (I'm just running around Havana at the moment, without a ship or a crew) but it's still a lot of fun.  I'm a fan of the franchise, and really enjoyed AC3, but they've deffo moved things forward a bit, with some simplifications to the controls.  I'm not entirely sold on it letting you use Eagle Vision to mark targets and then be able to see through walls (it's stretching it and then some in MGS:GZ in 1975, let alone in 1710 or the like!), but it's mainly something you just use for the follow missions, and they're hardly the highlight of the game in any account, so it's no biggy.  Visuals are nice, and it's great that you can quickly disable the HUD to take snapshots B).  Like the treasure maps and buried treasure as well, goes very well :D.

He does to!  I'd had that "he looks like someone" nagging at me, but hadn't connected the dots.
