I'm pretty sure this is new with the 'stability update' firmware download from last night, but I've noticed the PS4 comes back much quicker from sleep/suspend now than it did before (it used to feel like a full boot cycle, even from sleep - now it's 5-10 seconds or so - still not 'lightning', but a good deal quicker).

Tomorrow PlayStation 4 will get an update to system software version 2.50, codenamed “Yukimura,” which will bring an onslaught of new features: some you’ve been anticipating, many you’ve requested and others that might surprise you.

This update will make significant improvements to your PS4 experience, making it even more streamlined and enjoyable. Following the update, you’ll be able to smoothly pick games up right where you left off, find and connect with friends quicker, customise your experience and share your most epic moments in a more meaningful way.

PlayStation 4 v2.50 update

Features coming to PS4 with “Yukimura” include:

• Suspend/Resume: Supported by nearly all of your PS4 games, you can jump in and out of your games with just the press of the PS button.  Quickly switch from Rest Mode to powered-up so you can pick up where you left off.
  
• Back-up and restore HDD to USB: Back-up and restore your hard disc drive data associated with users on your PS4, including settings, saved data, screenshots and video clips as well as games, patches and download data, to and from an external USB drive.
  
• Find and connect with friends: “Yukimura” adds to an already robust set of social tools, bringing several updates to continue making PS4 the best place to play with your friends, including:
  
  • Facebook friend finder – Using your linked account, you can expand your network by searching and connecting with your Facebook friends.
    
  • Improved friend requests – Friend requests and Real Name requests can be sent together in one step when adding a friend on PS4.
    
  • Streamlined Party process – The process to create a Party has been streamlined with a reduction in the number of steps required.
    
  • Find friends who play your games – Easily view what friends are playing on each game detail page with a real-time “Friends Who Play This” section, which also highlights which friends are currently online and playing it, and allows you to jump directly into the game.
    
  • Join Friends directly from news feed – A new tile will be added on your What’s New feed where you can see what your friends are currently playing, enabling you to join in the game if you own it.
• Share earned trophies and optimise your trophy list: We know that Trophies are important to many gamers, so we’re bringing more control with how you show them off:
  
  • Automatic Trophy screenshots – A screenshot will automatically be captured when a Trophy is earned, preserving the moment to share with friends.
    
  • SHARE Trophies – Players can share Trophy information to Facebook, Twitter or via Message by pressing the SHARE button.
    
  • Additional Trophy sorting options – Sort your Trophy list by Earned Date, Not Earned and Grade.
    
  • Delete 0% Trophies – Remove games from your Trophy list that have zero percent completion.
• Improved and expanded accessibility options: New options added to customise the user experience include:
  
  • Customised button assignments for DUALSHOCK 4.
    
  • Zoom for displayed pictures and inverted colors for all system functions, apps and in-game.
    
  • Text-to-speech for all graphical user interface, including Message and Party.
    
  • Enlarged text for all graphical user interface, including Message and Party, as well as the system’s browser.
    
  • Bolder fonts and higher contrast UI for all system applications (but will not apply to games or third-party applications).
• Remote Play and Share Play: For games that support 60 fps, users will be able to automatically enjoy those games with 60fps for both Remote Play and Share Play* on supported devices.
  
• Automatic installation for system software updates: Enable automatic installation for future system software updates.
  
• Sub-account upgrade: Enable users 18 years of age or older with sub-accounts to upgrade to a master account directly on PS4, removing restrictions on chat and enabling users to add funds to their Wallet, purchase content and more.
  
• Verified Accounts: Select game developers, producers, designers and community managers will be verified with a badge.
  
• Dailymotion: Upload video clips directly to Dailymotion via the SHARE button.

PlayStation Vita and PlayStation App for smartphones and tablets will also receive system software updates tonight, adding complementary features to those added to PS4. PS Vita update version 3.50 and PlayStation App update version 2.50 will add new accessibility options, including enlarged text, increased contrast and more. This update also enables PS Vita to support 60fps streaming for Remote Play.

Find out what new features are coming in PS4 system software 3.00
New community features, increased cloud storage, YouTube live and more

PlayStation 4 system software version VSH3.00, (codenamed “Kenshin”) arrives, bringing with it a host of brand new features. Alongside oft-requested updates such as increased cloud storage, 3.00 will offer new functionality to help PS4 owners connect with friends and players around the world, expanding the social capabilities of the system even further.

The below list isn’t a final rundown of everything that’s included in the update, but we wanted to give you a glimpse at some of the exciting new features coming your way.

• Events: A new hub for events has been added, giving an overview of activities taking place in the games you play most, as well as official broadcasts. For instance, you may see an update for a double XP weekend, a special enemy appearing at a scheduled time, or seasonal events like in-game towns being decorated for the winter.
  
• YouTube live: PS4 owners will be able to live stream gameplay to YouTube. Live streams will be viewable across YouTube, including on the new YouTube Gaming mobile app and website.
  
• Online storage capacity increase: PlayStation Plus members’ PS4 cloud storage capacity will increase from 1GB to 10GB
  
• Favourite Groups: Favourite Groups has been added to the Friends app, letting you add new or existing groups as a Favorite Group and quickly access groups of people you like to play games with frequently. This will make the process of getting a game session up and running even easier.
  
• Communities: PS4 users will have the ability to create communities based around shared interests, like games, genres and more. Communities include a message board with general discussion, screenshots shared by players and the ability to join parties or games. If you want to tackle a big multiplayer raid, but don’t have enough friends, this could be a great way to connect with other likeminded players.
  
• Sharing video clips to Twitter: Users will have the ability to share video clips directly to Twitter. The maximum video length is 10 seconds, but you’ll have the ability to trim longer clips.
  
• Live from PlayStation: We’ve added the ability for users to view popular broadcasts, video clips and screenshots on the Live From PlayStation area
  
• Screenshots: We’ve listened to your feedback and we’re happy to confirm that PNG format is now an option for Screenshot saves
  
• Now Playing: The Now Playing screen will display more information about what your friends are doing, and you’ll be able to quickly jump into a party, request a screen share, or jump to PlayStation Store to buy a game your friend is playing.
  
• Request to watch: Want to view a friend’s gameplay session? Now you can send a ‘Request to Watch’ notification to a player, which will start a live broadcast or Share Play invitation to the person playing.
  
• Stickers: Tired of typing out messages? With this update, you’ll be able to send stickers to friends through the messages.

Oooh, that looks tops .  +1 for a GG community, am happy to set it up when it launches, but if anyone else is keen to (I'll probably crash it, after all ) just say the word .  Really like the whole communities and groups thing.  I wonder if Communities links to Events, so you could schedule a GG event in the community, and have it automatically pop up in the event hubs of the people in the community?  The stickers thing sounds pretty handy for quick, simple messages as well.

Looks fantastic and I did sign up for the beta but I think I'll pass for now. Not fussed on the complications, etc. Especially with just wanting to play Phantom Pain right now. I'll let others work out the kinks but can't wait for the full release. Especially the upgrade for the cloud capacity.

A full rundown of all the new features going live this week

PS4’s 3.00 system software, codename: Kenshin, is available tomorrow. We want to extend our sincere thanks to everyone that participated in the beta. We’ve listened to your feedback and made this system software update even better.

There are a lot of changes in this update, from entirely new features to UI enhancements. While we detailed its key features earlier this month, we wanted to give you an overview of our favourite new additions. This update is focused on creating new ways to connect with friends and players around the world, expanding the social capabilities of the system even further.

• Events: A new Events app has been added to PS4, accessible from the home screen. This will give you an overview of activities taking place in the games you play most, as well as official broadcasts.
  
  For instance, this week we have a double XP racing event in Driveclub and a Team of the Week Event in FIFA 16, you can register directly from the Events app. Once registered you can utilise the auto-boot functionality to set your PS4 to automatically turn on and launch the game and Event at the Event start time. Stay tuned for new gaming events and broadcasts.
  
• Communities: PS4 users will have the ability to create and join communities based around shared interests, like games, genres, and more. Communities include a message board with general discussion, screenshots shared by players, and the ability to join parties/games. You can find the Communities for the games you own on the game’s live detail page. See the Communities your friends have joined in the Friends app.

• PlayStation Plus: We’ve made a dedicated section for PlayStation Plus, which you can access from your PS4’s home screen. Once there you can easily manage your membership, see the monthly free games to download, as well as deals for PS Plus members, and all of the games you’ve redeemed through PS Plus on PS4. And a reminder to PS Plus members, your online storage for PS4 saves has now increased to 10GB.

• Sharing video clips to Twitter: Now it’s easy to share video clips to Twitter directly from your PS4. Maximum video length is 10 seconds, though you’ll have the ability to trim longer clips. Don’t forget – you can double tap the SHARE button to start recording a video, and press it again to stop.
  
• YouTube live: Now you can livestream directly from your PS4 to YouTube. Livestreams will be viewable across YouTube.
  
• Request to Share Play and Broadcast: Want to try out your friend’s new game? Now you can Request to start a Share Play session or watch your friend play via a Broadcast. Your friend can chose to start a Share Play session or begin a Broadcast.
  
• Live from PlayStation: Keep up with the hottest gaming trends by viewing the most popular broadcasts, video clips, and screenshots uploaded from around the world.
  
• PNG Screenshots: If you’d like your game screenshots to be in a higher quality format, you can now select PNG instead of JPEG. To access, press Share > Share Settings > Screenshot Settings > Image Format. We took some comparison shots.
  
• Favourite Groups: We’ve added the option for Favourite Groups to the Friends app, making it easier to access groups of people you play games with frequently. You can see we have favorite groups for Call of Duty, Rocket League, and (of course) our Destiny fireteam. Once you’re in the favourite group, you’ll see the online status for players, what games they are playing, and the option to message or chat in party.

• Stickers: From the PS4 system’s Messages app, you’ll see a new option for Stickers. The 3.00 update will contain stickers themed around Uncharted 4, Knack, Little Big Planet3, Resogun, and more.

More a PlayStation Store feature but the store now has a wishlist. On the web store its a little heart up above the  search bar with your avatar. Easy to add things to it since the little heart shows in searches so you don't have to go to the actual items page to do it.
Also has a privacy filter for 'no one' or 'friends'.

Not amazed, at all. I don't care about extras just to jack up a price to buy a collection all over again. Just give us basic emulation across the board for ps1/2 with what we already own in our accounts. Reeeaaally disappointed in this announcement...

I'm with Smokey on the 'how about just let our old disks work', but I do like most of their choices for games to lead with (I think three GTAs is overkill, but hey, they are all good - Vice City is a classic).  Rogue Galaxy was actually one of the PS2 RPGs I never got around to, so might give it a look this time around (at some stage, it wouldn't be me if I picked it up within six months of it being available ).  I've heard good things.
