SCEJA Press Conference 2015 - English

PlayStation VR is the official name for the PS4 virtual reality system
A brief update on the incoming headset

We’ve a brief update for you today on the PS4 virtual reality headset. Earlier this morning at the SCEJA Press Conference 2015 in Tokyo we announced the official name for the system: PlayStation VR.

“The name ‘PlayStation VR’ not only directly expresses an entirely new experience from PlayStation that allows players to feel as if they are physically inside the virtual world of a game, but it also reflects our hopes that we want our users to feel a sense of familiarity as they enjoy this amazing experience,” said Masayasu Ito, EVP, Division president of PS Product Business and VP, Software Design Division.

“We will continue to refine the hardware from various aspects, while working alongside 3rd party developers and publishers and SCE Worldwide Studios, in order to bring content that deliver exciting experiences only made possible with VR.”

Look out for more news on PlayStation VR in the coming months.

Cheers for posting Spec :).  Any highlights for you?  Will have to give it a watch later.  Playstation VR sounds like a very 'safe' name, but on the other hand if they do want it to have broad appeal, a name that's easy to understand is a good one, even if it might sound a little dull from my angle.

Haha, sooooo Japanese B).  I do love how different cultures are reflected (at least to some degree) in games from different nations.  There's clearly a lot of cultural mixing, but there's still something different about European, Japanese and US games, I reckon, at least on average.  Goes well :).

That's great news :).  Our exchange rate has dropped a bit since the PS4 first launched, so great to see we still get a bit of a price drop B).  Under $500 within the first two years is a pleasant change from the PS3 as well!

Cheers Virtual Spec B).  Those games look like they're coming along nicely - the quality of the visuals is very impressive given how VR's supposed to work as well (noting that it's best we take a 'believe it when we see it launched' approach, as per all pre-release visuals on almost anything these days).  I like the idea of Robinson, and Until Dawn looks like a great concept, although not one for the faint of heart :).

Sony haven't really been doing well lately with supporting external concepts, like the move which barely got any focus outside of the release window and in the end just got novelty games despite the potential. It'll be interesting to see what happens with VR, I'm not optimistic and hope what good games do come don't need the headset exclusively to run..

This is the usual misconception... the only games that will really work with both VR and without are going to be racing games and flight games because you're actually sitting in a cockpit (and on your chair). The way I see it, is you'll have specifically built games for VR that offer totally different experiences that you can only experience with VR.

I get that it can't be done for things properly using spacial location and all that but from the most basic level a lot of what's being shown like rig still is from a classic 1st person game perspective just the input is different. Most titles seem to be easily adaptable to more conventional controls like RIG, at least to me.

Aye, I agree - I think that, to some degree, that Sony will need to bite the bullet and build games made for VR, because anything else will be a compromise that will end up selling VR short.  There'll be games that do both as well, of course, but I'd be surprised if the best VR games weren't 'VR exclusive'.
