do i have to be that faction to be on the same team, or does it just let you play with/for whoever ?

Axe and I decided to be the same faction to avoid any issues since we really had no clue when starting.
But I don't think it matters in regards to joining.

From memory, there's a kind of party-ish thing on the left hand side of the UI when you're in the menus/home bit, and we joined up through there.  I do remember it being a bit finickity though.  Good luck :D.  If I get the PS3 back before you get into it, I'll give it a DL and join ya :D.

^Yeah found it, looks like we have to add each other as contacts first.
Axe I had a bunch of SP points like 6mil, got to go on a spending spree and get a fairly good fitting, which only cost me 8,500 isk to replace. Doesn't have grenades or a side-arm yet though. I have a self-repairing armour module so I generally go into fights with full health, a rail-gun(which I quite like) and I also carry an active scanner. Have a duplicate fitting with a Assault rifle which costs the same.

I had "3" domination games. First game didn't even deploy before the team I joined lost. Next game lost. Last game we won, got 10 kills for 2 deaths.

Used my scanner in the 2nd match, an orange blip popped up on the other side of the wall, well I fancied my chances. Around the corner waltzes a heavy, bugger, of all the things.

Nice one Spec B).  Commiserations about that heavily armoured blip!

lol I always forget about it but I'm sure it's still active. Probably a much better game than when I last loaded it up even.

so gave this a spin, first impression was that it was pretty decent, but that changed quickly.

first game i was having a real ripper of a round, can't recall how many kills i got but at times i'd get 6 guys in quick succession etc.  game was about to end though & i got signed out of psn & it kicked me.  thankfully my points etc seemed to have carried over anyway.

after that though i was just getting hammered every single game.  almost every player i came up against had a japanese name & there was a decent connection difference between us.  other issue i'm finding all the time is i'll smash someone but they've bought some super armor & won't die, or they'll shoot me with some super gun that takes me out in an instant.

Yeah I gave you bad advice, sorry. Turns out that there is this new academy thing that I didn't know existed (hadn't played in 8 months) that allows low level players to play each other but it has a limit, having you gain passive SP points early before actually playing probably wasn't the best idea.

You would've run into some proto's or heavies. You can't take heavies head on they're too armoured, they are slower and generally range limited so that how you tackle them. Protos are probably geared to high hell but still killable with a bit of luck.

You didn't ran into any tanks?

This game is quite random. You can join games that are ending, I have games where I go 8/2 then the next one I'll go 8/15.

yeah plenty of tanks.  had one game start where we went to fight them & the other team were ALL in tanks & we couldn't do a thing, just got spawn raped.  we had no turrets or vehicles & the anti armor guy is useless.  fires 3 rockets & by the time you fire again the tank has healed most of the damage & you run out of rounds anyway.  freaking awful.

Yep tanks are the worst so hard to counter with a group of randoms.
Yeah I have been red-lined before it sucks but I have also been in games where my team redlines the other one.
I carry two AV grenades not going to kill one but just in hope of scaring it off plus to to deal with any LAVs(jeep thingys) that try to run me over.

how do you get those, do you have to pay for them or just level up somehow ?  the leveling is so confusing too.

Yes the skill tree is confusing to high hell.
Skills are a combo off isk (money) and skill points. The isk buys the skill the sp levels it. Right now ignore the last bunch of skills(corp, turrets, vehicles).
I am not much help without the game infront of me. Personally I didn't run with anything but the free suits for a while and build my isk reserves.
They are 2 skills in the 2nd dropsuit tree. That increase suit shields and armour I would go for those first and a weapon that you like. If you want to stay free keep skill into what ever free weapons come with the (starter fits).

I personally use a Rail Rifle. Right no my top suit costs me about 16k isk per death so base on my earnings I can die around 8 times before I lose a profit.

The Future of DUST 514
Dear DUST 514 Community,

CCP’s development team in Shanghai has been working on a prototype for a first-person shooter for PC with the goal of building a great FPS set in our sci-fi universe of New Eden (the universe in which EVE Online, DUST 514, EVE: Valkyrie, and Gunjack are set). Their experience is being utilized to build a new game from scratch using Unreal Engine 4 while harnessing all our learnings from DUST 514. This is in many ways an evolution of Project Legion, the concept we announced at EVE Fanfest 2014, but without the limitations of technical debt and development paths we quickly discovered in that effort that could never serve as a future-proof technology base for a full production game. This new project is still in an early phase of production, and we feel like we’re on the right track and plan to give an update at EVE Fanfest on April 21st as a part of the free livestream of the event. Since this new game will be different from DUST 514 (although keeping many of its great parts), we will provide tiered recognition rewards to our loyal DUST customers, details to be announced.

We are very proud of what we’ve learned and accomplished with DUST 514 on PlayStation 3 over the past three years and it is an honor to be a part of such a dedicated community. We consider DUST 514 one of the best free-to-play offerings on the platform, but the years have caught up with us. It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that DUST 514 will be shutting down on May 30th, 2016. We therefore will not be releasing the 1.3 update as we had planned. Players will continue to be able to play for free on our servers until then, but all further PSN packs and purchases have been removed and disabled from the in-game marketplace and the PlayStation Store. Players with existing Aurum will be able to continue to purchase items from the in-game marketplace.

Thank you for being a part of DUST 514 on the PlayStation 3. We look forward to the next chapter, and hope you’ll be a part of it and continue the journey with us.

Cheers for the latest All-knowing Spec B).  Three years isn't a bad run, and I suspect free-to-play numbers on PS3 will be dropping off now as well.  Thought Dust was reasonable, but didn't quite grab me as much as Killzone or MAG, say.

Dust 514 Open Beta in 2013

By Axe99 in Gaming News, on 02 November 2012 - 10:17 PM

The team at Joystiq report that Dust 514 is going to remain in closed beta for the rest of 2012, and is expected to enter an open beta stage in early 2013.  While they're taking their time with this game, this is no bad thing - extra polish...
