Spectre'n'me hit up some Dust last night, and (after spending 20 minutes working out how to party up, lol) it went alright. Gameplay is solid and enjoyable, netcode is good (noticeably less lag than CoD or Aliens, say, although it was still there and some players lagged more than others) and depth of customisation is unrivalled (it's effectively a competitive shooter with strong RPG elements, from a stat-me-up perspective). However, that's its weak spot as well - someone who's played for a long time won't just have access to better weapons, they'll also do more damage with weapons, have less recoil, show up less on scanners and so on. It's probably a necessary part of the FTP model that its unbalanced by design, but unbalanced by design = fail for a competitive shooter in my book (so a fail for almost every comp shooter except SOCOM:Con this gen, lol - although most are balanced after a few hours, at least for one or two classes - Dust will be unbalanced forever, and far more so than we're used to).
That said, price of entry is very, very low - it's completely free to try, and you get free loadouts to play with - they're basic, but you could play forever on this for nothing. In terms of economy, I earned 30K ISK (in game-currency) in one match, and when experimenting with a basic non-free loadout, came up with one that cost 15K, so you'd want to play careful-like if you had a good kit. Reviving is very important in Dust given the economy - if you revive, you don't need to buy another loadout!
It's also worth noting that there is a small element of 'pay real money to get an edge' - at any given weapon unlock level, you can buy weapons that are as good as the next unlock level for AUR (in-game currency that you buy with real money, as opposed to ISK, which is earned in-game). So someone with an open wallet would have a minor advantage, all else being equal, over someone who was playing for nothing. Not a huge advantage, mind, but it'd be there.
Just some thoughts - was good games last night Spectre, I'd deffo be up for giving it another look-see at some stage

. (Got BF3 on tonight though).
