I wanna go to Japan :(

I was gonna buy the 3G version early as well, but I figured I had time 'til P4G's release.
Then that $300 deal came along, and I remembered I could share the 3G from my phone anyway.

You can't game over the 3G, it's just for near, facebook updates, and whatnot.  I use my phone's 3G, using it as a wifi hotspot, when I want to do any of that.  I'd probably recommend the non-3G one unless you were keen to do the social media thing on the road, and didn't have access to a smartphone or some other portable internet option.  From memory, the 3G required a sim card, but it was pay as you go rather than contract based, but that's pretty hazy - let me know if you want me to go sniffing for details :).

the 3G version in Japan is locked to NTT. don't make the same mistake as I did. :(
however, you can tether with your mobile (iphone/android) via wifi - that's what i'm doing now.

still toying with the idea of getting a vita as i'm finding it harder & harder to get on the ps3, have some questions though;

- i got ps+ yesterday & have the ps3 dloading games atm, including vita games.  how do i get the games off the ps3 & on to the vita ???

- how do i have games on the vita, say i buy one from a shop, does it come on a memory card ??  what if i buy it off ps store, obviously that needs to get on the vita so it'll need a memory card, what's the story ????

- what's battery life like ??

I'm not entirely sure, but I think you connect the Vita to the PS3 via the Vita's USB cable, and use content manager on the Vita.  You need to have the same account on Vita as PS3, so if you do get a Vita, make sure you use your GraphicX account (or whatever account you've got PS+ on) for that.

One bought from a shop comes on a game card (which I think is just a memory card but only for that game) - the Vita has two card slots, one for games, and one for memory cards. If you want to get DLC, or download a game from the PSN store, you'll need a memory card.  They're the weakest part of the Vita package, as they're a dash pricey.  I've got a 16GB card, with about 6GB of music and the rest for games and whatnot, but also get some larger games from retail, so they don't clog things up (from memory, you'll need 4GB or so for Uncharted:Golden Abyss).

It's good for a mobile device of its size, doing what it does (a lot of articles on the web compare its life to tablets, of which 60-70% of their mass is made up of battery, running far less complex applications) - but it's not terribly long - 3-6 hours of gaming, depending on the game, screen brightness, and so on.  If you make sure it's charged before a decent session, you should be fine.  You can get 'battery pack' add-ons, that extend it, but you can't replace the battery (we've got hackers to thank for that)).

$250 gets you a wifi with 1 game no card from eb. I reckon $450 to get set up with some decent games and a big enough card...which is way too much IMHO. When phantom pain comes out though...I'm buying.

I think (it's a bit hazy now, it was almost a year ago), I got set up for around $400, with the Vita, 16GB card, Wipeout 2048, Unit 13 and Top Darts, as well as a screen protector and case kit - it deffo wasn't cheap (I'd had a lot of use out of my PSP, so started saving well before launch so it wouldn't feel painful) but for me, personally, I've been very happy with it.  I generally like most gaming hardware, so I'm not terribly fussy (the only piece of gaming kit I've ever found painful to use was the Wii), so I may not be the best judge of it, but I love it, am a huge fan.

In terms of setup, if I was buying one tomorrow, I'd go for:
    - Vita - pretty important part of the package - $248 plus LBP:Vita from EB Games
    - Screen protect - $10 from JB Hi Fi
    - 16GB memory card - $68 from JB Hi Fi or EB, but I did a google and there was one for just under $50 on Ebay, so it might be worth having a look around.
    - PS+, which gets you Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush and a couple of other games, easily enough to start with.
    - A hard PVC case - JB do a decent-looking one for $24

So overall cost'd be a dash under $400, and close to $350 if you were already rocking PS+, and you'd start with five games, a good dash of memory, a screen protector (I highly recommend this - I got a couple of scratches on my PSP screen and they gave me the irrates - have screen protected my mobile and PSV since, and haven't looked back) and a carry case.  If you've got money to burn, 32GB > 16GB, but at over $100, it doesn't come cheap .

The biggest caution I'd give is that the Vita currently only has enough games to be someone's 'other' gaming system.  I mainly game on my PS3 and PC when I'm at home, so the current range of software is more than enough for me, but it's not enough to be the go-to system for anyone who games as their main hobby.  I do think it's a bloody awesome piece of kit though - I'd never play PSP games if I was at home, as the experience on PS3/PC was clearly better.  I find gaming on PSV, though, to be pretty much as enjoyable as on either - the quality of the screen, the capacity to play games with PS3-era game design, and the twin sticks, make it a sweet piece of kit (the sticks do take getting used to though).

Tempting but still too expensive for the whole package, Plus gives you the games for cheap but the memory card to use those games are still far to expensive.

Got the $200 EB Games PS Vita deal lol. I've ordered a 32GB memory card from overseas on Ebay for around $83 including shipping, and will probably pick up the official Starter Kit from JB Hi Fi after I get the memory card. Won't need to buy any games at the moment because of PS Plus, which is the best part for me :D.

By the way, JB has a similar deal going on at the moment too (only just noticed it):

    - Bundle includes PS Vita (WiFi) Console, Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale & Hive Starter Pack
