There is a Borderlands 2 prequel due out for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, according to a new report.

GamePointsNow.com claims the shooter is set between the events of Borderlands 1 and 2, and 2K Australia, which has helped with the 2K-published BioShock and XCOM games, is handling development duties alongside Gearbox Software.

Apparently the story revolves around a younger Handsome Jack, who is after a powerful alien artifact. You play one of Jack's four lieutenants: Athena The Gladiator, Wilhelm The Enforcer, Nisha The Lawbringer and Fragtrap, a militarised claptrap. The game is set on the moon of Elpis and Hyperion's H-shaped base, both of which can be seen from Pandora in Borderlands 2.
Elsewhere, there's a new class of weapon: the Cryo, and low gravity to contend with (jetpacks help you get around). Oxygen is also important. You loot it and must manage your reserve to stay alive.

Without PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions in the works, this Borderlands 2 prequel is surely out in 2014.
Gearbox Software usually reserves a few surprises for its annual panel discussion at PAX East, set for this weekend. We wouldn't be surprised if the game is announced there.

2K declined to comment when contacted by Eurogamer.

Honestly this is a big leap backwards imo.. They need to move forward, not do a damn prequel. While it could be ok, i just dont think it'll work, especially with:

That shit is going to ruin the fun imo. Why is there a sense of realisim in the borderlands universe? Thats just crazy!

Definitely some interesting things in there, but like ya say Saintsy, I'm not sure it's a great idea.  Thoughts:

- Go for something completely new - going back to Handsome Jack will feel a bit old.
- Oxygen management sounds odd - might work, but seems against the kick back vibe of many BL/BL2 sessions.
- I'd think a decent group of BL fans would have moved to current-gen, not at least releasing a cross-gen port will hold 'em back sales wise.

Is this confirmed by the developer yet? I love the Borderlands franchise, but this isn't what I'm looking for from Gearbox. At least Destiny is due out later this year... that'll probably be more akin to what I'm looking for. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Soon enough we'll get confirmation about it.
But reason they wont do a sequel:

Looks way too similar to BL2. Doesn't feel like a real pre-sequal. Looks like a cash grab.

The wait is finally over for a new game in the Borderlands universe! We're launching you to Pandora's moon for the first time in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, currently being co-developed by Gearbox Software and 2K Australia, and available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC later this fall.

Set between Borderlands and Borderlands 2, you'll play as four new characters classes fighting alongside Handsome Jack, witnessing his transformation into the ruthless tyrant you loved to hate in Borderlands 2, and assisting with the rise of the Hyperion Corporation. The signature shoot 'n' loot gameplay of the Borderlands series expands with the addition of low-gravity and oxygen-powered jetpack combat, the icy 'Cryo' elemental damage type, the deadly laser weapon class, and new vehicles to help you explore the lunar landscape.

Posted Image

Who will those four new playable character classes be, you ask? Well, they are all familiar faces from the Borderlands universe:
- Athena, the Gladiator: Uses her Kinetic Aspis, which is a shield that can absorb incoming damage, then convert it back into energy to use against enemies. Athena made her debut in The Secret Armory of General Knoxx DLC for the first Borderlands game.
- Wilhelm, the Enforcer: Wilhelm was previously seen in Borderlands 2 as one of the first deadly bosses in the game.
- Nisha, the Lawbringer: The sheriff of Lynchwood from Borderlands 2, Nisha will be dealing out her own brand of justice, which we'll discuss further in the coming months.
- Claptrap, the Fragtrap: Wait - Claptrap? The goofy robot companion from Borderlands 2, now playable for the first time? Fragtrap is his character class? Well, you can play him too!

Posted Image

In the upcoming months, we'll introduce you to more moon environments, new enemies, vehicles, and…well, we have to save some surprises.
For now, feast your eyes on the first images from Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, featuring low-gravity combat, cool new guns, and more gorgeous lunar vistas than you can shake a moon-boot at. Then be sure to watch the developer overview video below to get your first glimpse of the game in action.

But yes, i agree this is nothing but a cash grab, but anything borderlands is bound to be a cash grab haha.
Choosing 3 characters you've killed could be ok. Playable claptrap can simply get FC#Ked.
Does look interesting to say the least.

I feel like I'll end up buying this haha. It does look samey but it'll be interesting to see what the new characters can do. Especially ClapTrap :D.

I remember when Borderlands 2 was announced, and my first thought was "Borderlands was good, but I'm not sure there's anywhere to go from there, wouldn't it be a bit samey?", so BL2 turned out much better than expected (from my angle), and I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt here that they'll do it again.  Definitely getting that "a bit samey" feeling though.

I'm sure I'll give this a play through, but it does look like a cash grab to me. Seems like 2k Australia is doing the bulk of the work. I'm guessing it'll be more like the first 3 DLC packs for Borderlands 2 (which were also outsourced) - good but not great. Playing as claptrap will be fun, just hope I don't run into some STAIRS!

Anyone that joins my game as a freakin claptrap will be kicked!
God damn how they thought it would be a good idea ill never know haha!

You can see the "Air" bar or whatever it is in the second pic, hopefully its not something you need to worry about too much otherwise it'll become a "Play the game/play the "find the oxygen"" lol. Lets just hope that it doesnt deplete quick enough otherwise they better have a surplus of the stuff laying around everywhere.
Can already guess atleast 2 will have a skill to absorb it or slow it down, maybe even a team skill for it.

Question is, was Athena a siren or? I knew the bad bitch from Bl1 was a siren aswell, this could be a siren free borderlands.

Awesome trailer! It looks like it's packed with heaps of new gameplay mechanics and the story seems more intriguing now. Definitely going to play this some time.

Love you Saints
"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know My name is the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon thee."   Jules Winnfield

Started playing this on my PC in the morning - good fun :)

Only problem is that game keeps minimizing and I can't figure out which background app is the cause

Other than that the game is your typical borderlands craziness. Choose to play as Claptrap cause why the hell not
