I am fairly certain your upload is what matters when playing online... could be mistaken though? :S

Thats for cod, Higher upload = god like host advantage.
But yeah, ping is the major factor for it, hence why alot of games i just love playing against kiwis lol.
And now with next gen in the near future, most devs will/hopefully/should be looking at dedicated servers so that much wont matter as much as it does these days.
Just look at Kz2 for example :P

Does the ping change for each game depending on where the nearest servers are located?

Not sure, will have to wait for the smartypants to answer haha.

I think ping stays the same as its just the delay distance from person to person. Like from Me to Batise it should be about 5 where as from me to you, probably around 30-40-50 maybeish..

Just some games use ping primarily for online which can cause alot of problems. Though i could be utterly wrong which im pretty sure i am haha

With Ghosts and dedicated servers, ping will be a major factor for fast gaming for sure. So how it should be, by which I mean if you have faster internet than others, you'll be slightly advantaged on the game, rather than host dependent for all previous series (THANK GOD)!

On topic with this thread, I'm not sure if you get it over there in Aussie-land, but if cable isn't an option, there's VDSL. We get it over here (if you're within 1km of the exchange/cabinet), and you'll increase your upload 10x over ADSL2+, and downloads at about 40. So that could be something to take into consideration when looking at a new ISP

Download, Upload and Ping all affect your gameplay. Ping will determine how fast your connection communicates with the server you are playing on, Upload speed will affect how fast your connection sends data to the server and Download speed will affect how fast you receive data from the server.

That is why you can't really download all that porn and play at the same time without lag, or upload all your porn and expect to play without lag, Ping alone is not enough for smooth gameplay. Your ping will increase if you're doing this or others in your household are using internet enabled devices. Your ping also increases the further you are from the server's location.

There is also connection/line quality and packet loss - and if you're on wireless connection you may also experience packet / data loss if the signal isn't stable and keeps dropping.

There is another thing called "QoS (Quality of Service)" - which you can use to prioritise things on your router, you can configure your router to priorities gaming / VOIP over everything else to reduce lag.

I'm no networking expert so there might be some wrong information but that is what i have gathered over the years.

QoS is very useful especially when you have family members using the net when you are gaming. i prioritise my PSN traffic as highest. sshhh, don't tell my missus :D

The other thing you may want to look at to get better connection results for gaming is asking your ISP to turn interleaving off.

My understanding of it is that when you receive data packets, they're kind of scrambled. Your connection then sends this back to the server to create a bit more order in them. The idea here being that it increases the stability of the connection, however it does slow it down as it's waiting that extra time for the packet to be re-sent. This is interleaving.

I had my old ISP turn it off and I noticed a difference in connection speed when playing Blops, and didn't have any connection issues

Internode allow you to choose and change your own line profile. I chose Low Latency, my ping to Sydney is now 10.

When with Bigpond I found that the settings for changing my line profile did not work and according to complaints on the internet, it hasn't worked for a very good while. I always got a message saying something like "You have exceeded 3 line changes today. Try in 24 hours". Thing was I had only tried it once! My ping to sydney with Bigpond was around 50 - 60.

when you get your address or phone number go to http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au and it will show you how far to the exchange you are depending on your provider

I have iinet now and Im getting 15.5 down, 0.9 up and 15 ping (I'm in redcliffe, Brisbane) and I went from 3.4 with optus to my current and iinet were helpful the whole way through.
