Was playing some DA:I (quite a bit of it, as there's quite a bit of it to play), and it got me thinking.  You spend more than a little time going through comparing stats of items to see if you've picked up better, and it's generally a very simple comparison you do a lot of, and you can change weapons for some characters quite often.  The UI is set up to make it straightforward, but it's still a bit dull.  Got me thinking about potential other systems that might make weapon choice more personal and interesting - here 'tis:

Instead of just having a weapon (staff/spell) skill, that you apply at a set rate to your current weapon/staff/spell of choice, you have a skill for each particular weapon, that levels up as you use it.  Not only that, but different weapons have different degrees of difficulty, and different 'max skill benefits' to them (so a simple weapon you may learn fast, but a 'learned' user isn't a lot better than a unlearned one, but a more complex one might take a while to master, but once you've mastered it, it's kick-arse).

Then, when you see a new shiny weapon, the fact that it's base stats are better doesn't mean it's a no-brainer, it's actually a choice between that halberd you've had by your side for 20 missions and know like the back of your hand, and the shiny new sword that looks kick-arse, but you haven't used a sword much so will take a while to get good at it.

Thoughts?

IF YOU LOVE SOMETHING, SET IT FREE

Unreal Engine 4 is now available to everyone for free, and all future updates will be free!
You can download the engine and use it for everything from game development, education, architecture, and visualization to VR, film and animation. When you ship a game or application, you pay a 5% royalty on gross revenue after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter. It’s a simple arrangement in which we succeed only when you succeed.

This is the complete technology we use at Epic when building our own games. It scales from indie projects to high-end blockbusters; it supports all the major platforms; and it includes 100% of the C++ source code. Our goal is to give you absolutely everything, so that you can do anything and be in control of your schedule and your destiny. Whatever you require to build and ship your game, you can find it in UE4, source it in the Marketplace, or build it yourself – and then share it with others.

DEVELOP IN THE UNREAL ECOSYSTEM
Beyond the tools and source, Unreal Engine 4 provides an entire ecosystem. Chat in the forums, add to the wiki, participate in the AnswerHub Q&A, and join collaborative development projects via GitHub. Buy content in the Marketplace, or build your own and sell it there.
To help you get started, the engine includes a large number of video tutorials and documentation, as well as ready-made game templates, samples, and content.

UNREAL SET FREE
In early 2014, we took the step of making Unreal Engine 4 available to everyone by subscription for $19 per month. We put all of our source code online, available to all who signed up. We flipped the switch and crossed our fingers.
The past year has been a whirlwind for everyone at Epic Games. Our community has grown tremendously. The quality and variety of creative work being done has been breathtaking. When we asked people to submit their projects to be shown this year at GDC, we had the challenge of picking just 8 from over 100 finalists that were all good enough to show.
The state of Unreal is strong, and we’ve realized that as we take away barriers, more people are able to fulfill their creative visions and shape the future of the medium we love. That’s why we’re taking away the last barrier to entry, and going free.

MADE POSSIBLE BY THE COMMUNITY
For those of you who have been with us for the last year, thank you! With your input and participation, we’ve worked insanely hard to make the engine better, more useable and more powerful, releasing 7 major updates and more than a dozen minor updates.
In going free, we’ll be issuing a pro-rated refund to current subscribers for their most recent month’s payment. And, everyone who has ever paid for a UE4 subscription will receive a $30 credit that can be spent in the Unreal Engine Marketplace.

BLUE SKIES AHEAD
This news comes during an unprecedented time in our industry, amidst revolutions in virtual reality and augmented reality, and in the presence of the largest community of indie developers that has ever existed, all facing a crowded market and seeking the opportunity to stand out from the crowd.
Yet in Epic’s 25 years as an independent company, we have seen no time of greater opportunity for developers than today. Whatever your development aspirations, Epic stands with you, both as a technology provider, and as a fellow game developer counting on UE4 to power our own games.

Ooooh, intriguing news Spec :D.  All these engines going 'free to use, pay a per cent of revenue when you make money', I reckon, is even bigger than the consoles opening up to indies - back in the day it cost a tonne to get on board with a decent engine, but now the barrier to entry for development is as little as being able to support yourself while you dev, which is about as low as it can get.  Reckon we'll see even more great games from this move :).

WE'RE READY FOR OUR ENCORE. ROCK BAND 4, COMING 2015! PLAYSTATION 4 AND XBOX ONE

Quote

And here's a handy FAQ for you!

Q: When is RB4 coming out?!
A: Rock Band will be out this year. Stay tuned for more specifics in the coming months.

Q: What consoles is RB4 coming out for?
A: Rock Band 4 will be released for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Q: Why not Wii / Wii U / PC?
A: Due to shifting production priorities and capabilities of the studio, we don’t currently have plans to release RB4 on the Wii / Wii U / PC simultaneously with Xbox One and PS4. While we genuinely appreciate the support of Wii Rock band users over the years, and the increased interest from PC gamers, the truth is that we had to prioritize opportunities on other platforms with historically larger RB audiences.

Q: Will my old DLC work on the next gen console of the same type, i.e. PS3 -> PS4?
A: Yes! Content purchased from the store or exported from a disc will transfer over to the new generation of consoles at no addition cost as we make that content available.

Q: Will my old DLC work if I bought a different next gen console, i.e. Xbox 360 -> PS4?
A: Cross platform DLC compatibility is not entirely within our control, as DLC ownership is managed by the 1st parties.

Q: Will my old hardware work?
A: We’re already working closely with Mad Catz, Sony, and Microsoft on solutions for letting you use legacy hardware on new consoles. This is a challenge on both the software side and hardware side, but something we’d love to happen. We’ll have more information on this in the coming months.

Q: Will you be making new hardware?
A: Yes we will! You can preorder a new PAX East exclusive guitar if you come by the Harmonix booth! We’re working with Mad Catz, who has a lot of history with RB gear, and we’re excited to get more instruments back into the world.

Q: Will there be any new instruments, i.e. a tuba, accordion, mouth harp, etc?
A: We’re concentrating on the core band that people are most familiar with (guitar, bass, drums, and mic) rather than expanding on the types of playable instruments in RB4.

Q: What will the new Rock Band cost?
A: Sorry, but we’re not talking about pricing at this time.

Q: What instruments will be playable? Wiill RB4 have Pro guitar and keys?
A: Rock Band 4 will focus on the core experience and the roots of the franchise – guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. There will be no Pro Guitar or key support in Rock Band 4. We will continue to support “Pro” mode for Drums.

Q: What are the new features?
A: We’re not quite ready to reveal the evolutionary features of Rock Band 4, but we’re excited to show you in the coming months how we’re expanding the core gameplay you love.

Q: Will you be bringing back [Random Feature X]?
A: We’re not quite ready to reveal the feature set of Rock Band 4 yet, but keep posted for more info!

Q: Will you have songs by [Random Band X]?
A: We’re not talking about the disc soundtrack just yet, but you can bet it’ll be awesome. Over 2000 songs spanning over 500 artists already exist in Rock Band catalog and we’re committed to expanding that and supporting the game post-launch with DLC, and we’re always looking for new bands and sounds, so keep the suggestions coming! Let us know what you want at RockBand.com/request

Q: When will you have more news about RB4?
A: Soon! Keep posted to our social channels and the Harmonix forums for updates.

Q: When can I preorder RB4?
A: You can sign up for preorder notifications right now at RockBand.com/preorder!

Cheers for the news Spec B).  Was always going to happen at some stage, and Harmonix are the original and the best :).  I hope they'll get the old peripherals to work though, particularly if they're keeping it the same feature-wise, would be a horrible waste of plastic otherwise.

Aye, it's a little sad but also not crazy unexpected.  I'm still catching up on last year, and this year is a bumper year for strategy (Cities: Skylines, Homeworld Remastered and Starships all out within a month, Hearts of Iron 4 within the year and Tropico 5 on PS4 soon) so I'll have plenty to keep me going.

It is tough, no doubt - but I'd prefer them to strive for their best... good things take time. Imagine the immense pressure they're under to deliver something a cut above their previous games.
