well my cpu cooler is dying, it isn't even that old (could probably do a warranty on it if i can find the details).

it's an antec liquid cooler, i paid about $50 for it from msy, but now looking they're way over $100 !!!!  i don't want to replace it with the same, so what are my options ?  apparently my case can take a 240mm double liquid cooler but they're even dearer, it's a freaking cooler ffs !!!

it's a socket 1150 intel.

reason for going liquid on the cooling is my office isn't airconditioned, so it really does get very hot, thinking the recent hot weather (we had 47 one day & set a new record for most over 40 days in december !!!) may have been what caused it.

i'm blaming the liberal government, 1 for my cooler breaking down & 2 for the aussie dollar being so sh!t that everything is over the top expensive.  i'm also blaming axe as he'll say 'never have that issue on console' blah blah blah.

I'm not sure if the socket really matters, it should fit all sockets (or all the main ones as they usually have an adjustable clamp)... it's just a matter of how much room you've got in the case.

It's not the Libs fault, the Aussie dollar is where it is most of the time, we just had it really good for a while with the mining boom.  It's still a lot better than back when our dollar was 50-odd US cents for a while - I was getting some stuff from overseas then and it was right painful!  That said, of course it would be nice if it was back around parity .

As for console, to be fair, if it breaks, you've either got to get it repaired (often 100-200) or replace the thing entirely (400-500), but the latest generation do seem to handle the heat better.  PCs are better to maintain cost-wise because as long as you know what you're doing, you can replace one bit at a time.  I've found in my experience they break a little more than consoles, but the current machines we have, are actually holding together fairly well (touch wood!)

You do have my sympathy, dealing with PC parts breaking down is always a pain in the rear - good luck finding a replacement part at a reasonable price .

@ gc; that's the kinda thing i'm looking at, i just need to figure out how much room i have at the top as in space between the top of the case & the mobo itself.  seems to be a good 40mm, but i think it's whether bits just out that's more important.

@ axe; stop sticking up for your dirty libs.  lowest au dollar since howard was in & highest unemployment since howard was in, not to mention biggest ears since EVER & have i mentioned the NBN ?  don't get me fking started.

well here's where i'm at with the cooler, turns out it's 18 months old but has a 3 year warranty.  what i've done though is go into the bios & set a higher percentage (watt) per degree celsius & it's working great again, although i don't know how long for.  it's an odd issue as i connected it to a fan controller & of the 3 settings that has the low setting & medium setting are fine, set it to high & it just sorta chugs along, which is where i'm in trouble with cooking the cpu of course.

yesterday fallout 4 (which i've just completed with 3 different endings & have only 2 achievements left to get hehe) was running like utter crap.  now it's cooling again it's nice & smooth.  so i'm guessing the cpu was capping itself instead of cooking itself which is a relief, although if it did cook i'd have an excuse to buy an i7.
