if you haven't noticed yet i have a real soft spot for games featuring turn-based combat, particularly if they're open world with player customisation (rpgs pretty much).

since getting the pc there just seems to be droves of this genre coming out & it's a real boon for me (these games are so popular right now they're even going multi-platform !!!!).  so rather than start a thread whenever i spy another i thought i might just update this one (since i'm probably the only person here with this weird fetish lol).

just a side note, my first game of this sort was on the Sega Megadrive, called Buck Rogers, Countdown to Doomsday & i replayed it endlessly;

that was followed by Fallout 2, possibly the greatest of them all;

the two best turn-based games released in recent history that are pretty much 'must play';

Wasteland 2;

has just been completely revamped in a new game engine & also gone multi-platform.  loosely based on the fallout universe & the desert ranges;

http://store.steampo....com/app/240760

Divinity: Original Sin;

absolutely awesome game, they're currently making a sequel which i've backed on kickstarter;

Great thread Graph B).  Am a big fan of turn-based strategy/tactics myself, either in the RPG space or elsewhere (Panzer General is one of my early faves in the genre, more wargame than RPG, although you could accrue experience for your core units over the campaign - or at least the core units that survived :)).

On top of the ones you've listed there, I've played about ten hours of Blood Bowl 2 now, and it's a great turn-based tactical game.  Kind of a cross between sports and combat (more sports, but it is possible for the players to die!), and your team's players (and coach) can level up with time (and players start retiring after 13 seasons).  Seems to have a lot of depth in it, as there's a wide range of races and teams which all play fairly differently.  AI is pretty good too.  Will report back in 20 or so hours if it starts to get samey or not, but at this point early impressions are pretty good.

As an aside, Panzer Corps is apparently a great 'updated' take on the turn-based warfare of Panzer General, now on Steam as well as at Matrix games :).

i've got almost a dozen more games to share in here, including 'expeditions', which axe himself is quoted as saying;

'this game is by far the most difficult game i've ever attempted & it found me wanting'.

yes you heard right guys, axe was bested by a n00bs game about spaniads & amazonians lol.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown:

really solid game that is a throwback to the original XCOM series.  includes a cover system & is a great example of a modern turn-based combat game.

Expeditions: Conquistador

yes the infamous game that was the better of axe66 (yes those are upside down on purpose).

very unique setting & it is actually quite a difficult & punishing game, but if you stick it out it's quite rewarding when you complete it.

Shadowrun:

there's a few of these, dragonfall & returns i've completed, looking forward to boston lockdown & hong kong but the universe they're set in is extremely weird, & dare i say difficult to become interested in.  the gameplay itself is solid, there's a lot of reading to be done but it's not awful.  worth a look if you're mad keen on these games like i am though.

You're upside down on purpose :P.  All great games though, cheers for posting Graph B).  We'll get you playing old persons' games yet, it's only a small step from this to strategy :P.

i already love Civ games ;)

another one from the honeypot;

Valkyeria Chronicles:

this isn't isometric, but it's a great manga turn based strategy with character customisation.  you follow a much more predefined campaign, but it totally suits it.

have to add now my all time fav, Fallout 2;

Posted Image

http://store.steampo...d.com/app/38410

there's also the predecessor Fallout, but i haven't played it;

http://store.steampo...d.com/app/38400

& it's kinda sideliney game i haven't played also; Fallout Tactics;

http://store.steampo...d.com/app/38420

these are all old as now, but Fallout 2 is held in massively high regard & really did define the genre to an extend (xcom people would no doubt wrongly claim xcom did).

Fallout & Tactics are on my bucket list that's for sure.

http://store.steampo....com/app/208400

Blackguards 1 & 2:

both appear to have great graphics, but pretty bad reviews.  will go into them with low expectations & hope for the best.

Back in the day this was one of australia's highest grossing games, made my microforte in canberra.   The two leader techs on it went on to big things.  One was the lead on Bioshock, the other is now tech master for league of legends :)

some more stuff just read, divinity: original sin is going cross platform as early as late this month !!  it'll of course have full controller support which will also be added for the pc in an 'enhanced' edition which has more quests etc on all systems.

it's mega great news as lets face it, console gamers have pretty much no games worth playing other than wasteland 2 which was release not too long ago across the systems.
