well win10 is live & it's had very little mention here.

finally got around to updating mine to it.  was very reluctant as a friend did it, had some error of 'missing components' & lost the lot :S

i updated from windows 7 home premium, i lost count of how many times it attempted the update, each time the <3gb download took over 3 hours, only to fail during various parts of the install.  final install took probably a good 6 hours !!!  couldn't believe it.

from win7 to win10 the install footprint is 28gb less which is nice, means i can keep using my 64gb ssd for windoze & the 2 120gb ssds for games.

all the talk on win10 is how much better it is for gaming, giving games nice little fps boosts but i'm not seeing that.  still playing fallout new vegas i'm definitely having a smoother run in small areas & initially outside, but after a fight i now get a terrible frame rate drop that can last a fair while that was non-existent previously.

another couple of issues i've encountered include the machine has turned off & back on as if the power was cut & also when i launch a game the screen now redoes/re-registers the screen resolution which it didn't do previously.

boot time is a little quicker than it used to be, it 'feels' quicker as it keeps the bios screen up longer than it used to while loading windows, but it's about the same as it was (maybe 5-6 seconds).  shut down is significantly quicker though only taking maybe 2-3 seconds.

it looks much cleaner & a little more professional, but the refinement only goes so far.  start opening settings/options/driver areas etc & you will still find the bastardised mish-mash of dialogues harping back to the days of win 95 etc.  it really is pretty skin deep the refinements which in all honesty feel like either a free OS, or something like an android OS or skin.

a lot of stuff is where it has always been, but a lot of stuff is just in stupid spots.  stuff like the screen saver is tucked away in a new area, yet the screen saver dialogue is that of win 95, just feels like they moved it for the sake of it.  also the weather app is dumb, have entered, saved/favorited my location, yet it still prefers to show canberra's weather in fahrenheit for quite a while til it remembers i live in country SA.  pretty basic stuff, but surely you'd think they could get the basics right ?

oh another issue is my keyboard is still fudged.  it's a logitec, nothing fancy yet it still can't produce special characters such as the @ symbol, install using a ' instead.  annoying as even the ps3 gets it right with it.

I downloaded it last week and haven't had any problems upgrading from 8.1 Pro (since). I do agree however, the UI isn't very consistent. It is better (or more consistent) than 8.1 though as there was that more modern flat look but all the icons were from yesteryear which looked downright odd. Apple's designers are obviously far better and I don't think Windows will ever be better than OSX. Notifications is basically a ripoff from OSX as well. Standard Microsoft stealing ideas that Apple have been doing for years. They could really rethink a lot of it - some of it doesn't make sense and is confusing but at the same time it's less confusing than 8. I don't use any of the apps - if I use apps, the are usually on my Mac anyway (as they seem to do a much better job with them). Not complaining though - it's a step in the right direction and is better than 8.1 was and it's better than 7 as well.

With that said though - wonder when Apple will make the next 'big' change (like we saw from 9 to X)?

I upgraded a few days ago, and it went fairly smoothly.  Right at the end, it gave me a black screen with just the mouse pointer and nothing else, but was able to bring up task manager with ctrl-alt-del, somewhat nervously restart and then everything was alright.  Since then it's been pretty smooth, but for an OS that's (apparently) designed for a multitude of devices, it feels a bit harder to configure to use at 2-3 metres (ie, from a recliner/couch) than Win 7 or 8.  Seems to run smoothly enough though, and having a start menu back is nice (although I still prefer Win 7's setup).  Also nice that the mouse ending up on the edge of the screen doesn't bring up a menu.

All up, it's reasonable enough, but I wouldn't want to have paid money for it (it'd effectively be paying money, in most cases, to remove stuff that I didn't want added in Win 8!), and a little scrappy in a few places.

This has happened to me once too.  Made me a little nervous, a little less nervous now that it's probably not just me (ie, my motherboard/PSU doesn't have a dodgy connection somewhere), but it's a bit of a worry in terms of stability.

not sure they need to as OSX was a ground up build, which is perhaps what MS should've done with WinX to stop the little inconsistencies as you navigate.

Yeah - seems to be some good little refinements in there. I hope the Mission Control thing is relating to multiple desktops (like W10 has). I do like the split view as well not that it's anything new. My widescreen comes with software inbuilt and I can arrange it into grids and apps just snap into place so you can see multiple apps at the same time.

did a clean install of win 10 on my pc this weekend.  freed up another 4 or 5 gig to what it was like.  went into the bios & there were options for fast boost & ultra fast boot so enabled ultra fast & the desktop now appears in under 10 seconds from turning on which is nice.

like the first time i installed i had one of those random shutdown moments, as if the power had been cut.  hoping like before it's just a once off.

I hope it helps with the framerate thing .  I'm finding that sometimes with Win10, the first time I boot up, it fails to connect to some Windows servers/services or the like, and Chrome won't work either, and I need to restart (which takes an age, longer than it used to - so Windows is clearly doing something).  It's not all the time, and often related to an update, so suspect it's some kind of sync issue with updates, although that's a fairly rough guess.

i've turfed new vegas so no idea if it would've fixed it, dirt rally is smooth as silk on max everything but no idea how it would've been before as never played it in win 10.

did you do a clean install of win 10 ?  it's not a huge big deal, if you do it via the media creation tool with a usb stick it'll even download all the drivers you need before starting.  might be worth a try.  also does your mobo have fast boot/uefi or whatever it's called ?

No idea, it works well enough for now, and I don't have the spare capacity to do a full install (and even less if something goes wrong), so if it ain't broke, I'll leave as is.  The restart every now and again issue is pretty much the only thing that's causing trouble now (it hasn't had any random shutdowns since the first few days), so it's no biggy.  Thanks for the ideas though .

No clean install this way - although it'd be a good thing to do... might do it one day but not absolutely necessary.

I have had a little play around with 10, had an old laptop and an few extra windows 7 32bit keys wasn't going to waste a 64bit on it so thought why not give it ago.

Took over a day to do, needed to install 300 updates for 7 to get the upgrade to 10 thing to appear, installed 10 activated it, clean install it which took several goes since it wouldn't reactivate till I realised I wasn't trying to activate the home version when I activated the pro version at first.

Feels familiar to 7 quiet a bit, I skipped 8 so I don't know of the interface hell it seemed to be. So far what little I have done it all seems to work, I don't think I will have to much issue going to it once I get it on the main PC later on.

This is going to sound like the smallest thing but I can't find an answer anywhere.

Running W10 on a desktop, no touchscreen. Whenever I wake the PC up it has that screenshot image that you have to flick up before you can login to your account. Is there anyway to disable this flick step? Takes 0.5 seconds but it is needed. Knowing me there will be a setting written in bold and I just can't find it.

Can't comment on the Windows 10 improvements, upgraded from 7 but I also did a reformat so of course 10 is going to seem better now that the computer is running smoother.

No idea what you're talking about Macca - I'm a Mac person (have been for 20+ years), the only thing I do on PC is game. Hopefully someone else here is a Windows wizard??
