You read the headline correctly. And we are just as excited as you probably are! Telltale, the studio behind last year's critically-acclaimed Walking Dead video game series, is developing a new series based on Gearbox's Borderlands games. [UPDATE: Trailer added!]

They're going to call it Tales from the Borderlands, and it's debuting next year.

It appears to star some new characters who are not vault hunters. They're "wannabe vault hunters," according to Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford. The game is described as very much a Telltale game, with lots of story to it.

A short trailer at tonight's VGX teased what's got to be a dream collaboration between the makers of one of the most popular multiplayer shooters around and the makers of some of the best story-driven games going.

"You get to shoot stuff, but in a different way," said a Telltale developer at the show. "It's gonna play like a telltale game—you're going to be engaging characters and developing relationships, but it's very much in the borderlands world. It's this great hybrid of everything that's great about Borderlands and everything thats great about Telltale."

Hopefully the game is as cool as it sounds. Borderlands was already proof that a combo of shooter and loot-based RPG could work well. A combo of Gearbox and Telltale sounds pretty damn good, too.
Telltale is launching the first installment of their second season of their Walking Dead series later this month. They also just released a game based on the Fables comics and are rumored to be working on a Game of Thrones series. That's a mighty fine line-up.

TT style game on borderlands? Wont work out as good as peoples hopes are saying.

It's an interesting take - like you say, I wouldn't go ga-ga about it, I think their formula is more likely to work with Game of Thrones, which has a lot more talking, and a lot less action involved (the action sequences in GoT are memorable, but most of the show is spent watching people talk snarkily to each other ;)).  Still, I think they could make it work, they have set up a potentially entertaining world in Borderlands, but it could get a lot of people playing it expecting something _very_ different!

Yeah their take on games would be great fot Got, but borderlands? If its not primarily loot and action based, its not going to work.
Borderlands isnt known for story lol, yes it does have a hilarious dialogue behined it, but if i were asked to say 5 great things about Borderlands, story wouldnt come close and thats what TT does lol. It's going to have to be the perfect balance.

Guess just have to wait n see.

New details and screenshots have been revealed for another new upcoming Borderlands game - this one developed by the talented minds at Telltale Games (creators of epic The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us episodic game series').

Much like their latest projects mentioned above, this Tales from the Borderlands game will focus much more on telling compelling new stories from around Pandora in the iconic Telltale Games' style rather than involve the action-packed, first-person shooting gameplay many of us have come to love about the series since the beginning. Though the pacing of the game is expected to be much slower, passionate vault hunters and raiders can still enjoy scoring plenty of loot and your stash could even be available for other Borderlands games in the franchise! Read on for more details :D.

Pandora has a wealth of stories to offer, and Gearbox wants them told. Telltale is going to collaborate with you through the choices that you make to get some of those stories out there, and to create a brand new Borderlands experience. If you play Borderlands simply for the sake of shooting stuff, then you might not be a fan of Tales, but if you enjoy being on Pandora, hanging out with and finding out more about all of the amazing characters, and/or you’ve enjoyed what we did in The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, then this might be a game series for you.

What else can I say about this game series?
  • The loot you grab in Tales will be available to use in other areas of the Borderlands franchise
  • It’s an episodic series that’ll be $4.99 per episode (or you can save with the Season Pass)
  • Your choices matter and will help create YOUR version of the story across the season
  • The series takes place after the events of Borderlands 2. Handsome Jack is gone. Or is he? You might have seen the trailer we put out a while back
  • You’re going to play two different viewpoints. Rhys works for Hyperion; he’s a company man with grand ambitions that have been thrown off the rails. Fiona is a fast-talking con artist, with very few people left on Pandora she hasn’t swindled one way or another
  • They both have a very different opinion of the events that brought them together, and the only way to find out something near to the truth is to live their lives and make your own decisions
And the loot; don’t forget the loot!

I like the look of this :D.  While I'm a big fan of the Borderlands universe/fiction/vibe, I think I'd need another couple of years before I was ready to get into the gameplay again (I'm just a bit 'played out' on it at the moment), and this'll fill the gap nicely, as long as it's a decent story.  Thanks for the info Live :D.

Can't go wrong with Borderlands - sounds like a new story approach, which is a great thing to keep a franchise alive and healthy (ie Bioshock Infinite - being only minutely related to #1 and 2).

Is this going to be new gen and old gen?

Tell that to hammerlocks DLC lol.
I'll probably give this a miss, not an overall fan of this style of game. Bring on the presequel i guess lol

I'll be getting this too :). Not sure if it'll be both old and new gen but it seems to be just listed for old gen so far.

Here's a few vids about it that I missed putting up (and watching, lol):
