what are peoples thoughts on this, should be picking it up on the 27th & using it pretty well for gaming only (might put a hdmi capture card in it later on though):

Intel core i5 processor (3.4 to turbo 3.8ghz quad core)
Asus P8 H77-M pro motherboard
8GB Corsair ram
120GB samsung SSD + 80 GB sata HDD

mate at work who's savvy with these things reckons chuck a new graphics card in it & it'll be a decent buy ($270 i think he said).

i've already got a screen, but no keyboard, mouse etc.

the game rust has me a bit keen to jump on just for some fück around, few other pc games have caught my interest at times too i wouldn't mind dabbling in now i'm not locked 100% into CoD.

Deffo want a new GPU - the X50 line from Nvidia is pretty low-end from a gamers perspective.  Your PSU looks like it could comfortably cope with whatever you're keen to get though.

That HDD - is that an 800GB HDD or 80?  If 80, you might want to bump it up to 500GB, 80GB isn't a heap these days.

8GB of RAM should be fine for the moment, but make sure the motherboard has room to go to 16 - RAM requirements for games on PC were multiple times that of the same games on console, and in 3-4 years time I'd bet PC games need more than 8 at least.  Checking the speed of the RAM (and the speed the motherboard can handle) is a good thing as well (same for speed of HDD - 7200rpm is better than 5400rpm).  Faster RAM/HDD = faster loading, and better streaming.

When you get a GPU, pay attention to whether it's DDR3 or GDDR5 ram - while there was some speculation when everyone was talking console specs, my understanding is that it's fairly established wisdom that  1GB of GDDR5 is can better than 2GB of DDR3 in a GPU.

Overall price is pretty good, i5 is a good deal stronger than the CPU in the new consoles, and should be able to go the distance for a good while from a gaming perspective.

Anyways, that's some thoughts from someone who's fairly clueless on these things - wait for the PC guys to jump on and give you more informed comment .

On the by, a dualshock 4 makes a good gamepad on PC - my experience with Alan Wake has been pretty good.

my mate here priced it all out & it if we did it as a build & it came to $966, so it seems like a decent buy.

had a look at the specs on the mobo & it'll go up to 32 gig or ram, so fair bit of head room there, but it's pretty well maxed out with the cpu (it's the highest the i5ks go from what he told me).

i think he's looking at an amd video card for me as you can run it in crossfire (?) & you don't need 2 identical cards (if i wanna add another in the future).

oops, & yeah it's only an 80gb hdd.  he said to chuck a tb in it but i've got drives laying about & i'd can't picture filling it with just games in the near future.

Here's my latest build - under 3K. (just a quick screen grab). All I'd need to do is add another 780ti (when they become much cheaper) and I'd be sweet for a very long time.

Edit: Missing a PSU... will still be under 3K though even with a semi-modular.

i imagine that graphics card @ $900 will be easily capable of playing anything that comes out in the next couple of years o.O

Overall its pretty solid - whats your price limit though all together?

Some recommendations:

-look into buying an i7 CPU. Considering that both the PS4 and X1 have CPUs which can hyperthread I will not be surprised if future games require hyperthreading to run smoothly(i.e. I am pretty sure the PC release of watchdogs recommends an i7 cpu). Its not essential, but it doesn't hurt either

-a 700w PSU is a bit overkill for this build imo. you could easilly drop down to a 620/650w bronze power supply and be fine

-as Axe said look into a better GPU. I am biased in favor of Nvidia, but AMD make nice cards too, -however AMD cards are power hungry so read their specs to see the minimum PSU requirement.

it's not my build, a guy built the thing (it's still brand new) & now wants to sell it.  he said it cost him over $900 to build it (which we priced to $966 online) & it's kind of an impulse buy i guess.  so what's there is what i get.

from what i've read up it's an ok platform to build from.  fairly urgently it needs the graphics card but with that it'll apparently be pretty decent for a fair while.  from there it'd be the usual new mobo/cpu/ram/another graphics card round about that pc gaming brings with it.

ok, try this one, should be picking up tonight after work for $550:

3.10 gigahertz Intel Core i5-4440 (second slowest i5 i think & it's not a k so no overclocking)

Board: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. H81M-S2PH (mobo is garbage, doesn't have pci express 3 so needs changing)

1x 320gb hdd
1x 500gb hdd
1x 64gb ssd

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 (i thought these were garbage but looking around they seem fairly good for the price & will tackle the games i wanna play like rust & day-z)

32" telefunken screen (basically a tv that i'll chuck in a spare room, will play on a 24" screen i already have)

probably a keyboard & mouse, but i haven't seen a picture of it yet.

That sounds pretty decent for $550, I've got a GTX 660 in my PC and it's coping with what I'm throwing at it (the hardest it had to work recently was for Shogun 2: TW, but the PC games coming out at the moment have recommended specs at or below it, so it should hold up reasonably this gen, although might start to struggle towards the end, but you can just upgrade it then .  See you on the dark side .

picked it up last night, wasn't looking good as the guy was pretty shifty.  started off saying the screen (aka. tv wasn't with it), along with anything other than the box itself which he'd listed as being with it.

i said i'd take it for $450, but other than that he can keep it.  he went to walk off with it & was getting pretty sh!tty (which was quite funny to watch as he kicked gravel & muttered stuff to himself lol).  as i was getting in the car he said he'd take the $450 so yeah.

reading around on the net it also looks like i won't have to swap out the motherboard.  apparently pci-e 2 is adequate for the 660 & won't bottleneck it too much.  also read threads where people chucked it in their 2 & 3 slots & there was almost no difference (barely 1 or 2 frames) so that's good.  reckon i'll change the case though as it gets hell hot in my office at home (no aircon !!!!) & it'll want decent fans i think.

Decent PC, the gpu may cope depending on what you want to play, but a 660 or something is a great card.

other then that, i would probably put in a bigger HDD, the CPU is fine, i dont think many games will get much benefit out of hyper threading in the near future.

good price though.

i put win 7 home premium on it last night, that chewed 39 gig out of the ssd, but will the old platter hdds be fine if i install games onto them & keep the ssd just for the os ?

also the card is slightly better than i though, it's not the gigabyte 660, but the msi 660 which is very slightly quicker (will probably equate to very little difference in real world use though).  i'm hoping i can get by with it for a while before pouring money into it, still wanna pick up a ps4 in the very near future (& get a 500 gb ssd for it at the same time), so don't wanna be putting ridiculous cash into gaming.
