so looking to get a mobile phone, prefer the android os over apple.

was thinking about getting a sony acro s:

thoughts on this phone are;
- waterproof
- good screen size without being too big (mates have the bigger versions & they tend to snap in their pocket)
- should be able to make use of sony/playstation apps
- seems cheap, around $350

i'm not really a phone person, can any one see any issues i might face with this (best i can tell they never released it in aus, will this be an issue ???), i'm also unsure how old it is, would hate to buy it only to find a month later there's a newer & cheaper one :/

any phone gurus out there ?  any other suggestions ?  waterproof is a big plus for me as i get soaked all the time.

ok, so there's another one called the xperia V that seems to be very similar to the acro S but might be newer or better.  can someone confirm ???

I don't know Arthur from Martha when it comes to mobiles, other than being able to tell the difference between Android and iOS devices (the apple on iOS devices usually gives them away ).  Digital Foundry over at Eurogamer reviews some of the higher-spec models from time-to-time - here's some links (note, I may link a tablet or two by mistake - apologies if so!)

that xperia z is what 2 of my mates have (one a regular z, the other the new z that just came out, might be called an ultra ?).  they're full 1080p screens & look like pure sex, but they've both broken them several times, costing them almost $300 a pop to replace (they get brand new phones for a 'repair cost' of almost $300).  basically they bend when in the pocket & then half the touch screen stops working since it's built into the glass & the screen is over 6" in size :/

i've found sizes directly comparing the V to the acro S & they're just making it harder.  i really want the waterproof feature as it'll be inevitably drenched & i don't want a massive phone so these 2 fall in that sorta category.  but on specs & cost they're so similar i don't know the real differences.

Xperia Z1 (Waterproof & Is the latest high-end from Sony)

Samsung Galaxy S4

Samsung Galaxy S4 Active (waterproof)

Google Nexus 5 (the recently released nexus)

I've been using the Xperia Z for half a year now and have had no issues with it at all.

i'd like to spend under $400 on a new phone.

i seriously looked at the nexus 5, but i think it'll either end up soaked or broken, so really want something waterproof but also not too big.

just had a look at that s4 active, think that's getting beyond my budget unfortunately.

just read some more reviews etc on the acro s vs the V & both have strengths & weaknesses over each other.  one thing is that V has the home button etc on the screen which chews into your screen space whereas the acro has the symbols on the actual phone.  but the V can be upgraded to the latest version of android whereas the acro can only go to 4.1.  really have nfi which is better & odds are i'd probably be happy with either.

How much is the Xperia Z C6603 in Australia? The newer Xperia Z1 might cost more than $600 but the older model (C6603) should be around or under $400?

hadn't considered it, let me ebay ... fair few on there from anything from $370 to over $600.

what are the odds of these 2 being 'new; never used' as listed ?  my gut is telling me at those prices they're probably ex-demo or even used with hardly any marks.

Yeah I'm guessing they're most likely ex-demo or used but in good condition like u said.

That Xperia Z has almost identical specs to the Galaxy S4. The 'Ultra' models are the ones with bigger screens, like the Galaxy Note.

well i'm going to order one of those phones, if there's a problem with it i'm blaming you lolol.  will read the feedback first though, one place i was looking at for an astro s had all through it that the phones sold as 'brand new' were refurbished etc, don't want any headaches like that.

As I said before, I've had mine for half a year and never had any problems with it. I did buy mine new from JB HIFI.

i'm pretty sure that's one of the ones a guy from work has who's snapped it a couple of times (the other guy has that bigger one).  i've also ordered a case for it so fingers crossed it doesn't meet an abrupt end.

the phone finally turned up today, something like 2 days late even allowing for the public holidays & sunday.

first impression (well i've used this model before, but impression for myself) is that it's going to be too big to put in my over suit & not get broken.  it's a really really nice phone & all, but damn it's big & the screen is just asking to cop a hit & be broken.  apart from that everything else is great, currently syncing part of my itunes library with it (until my 64gb micro sd card turns up) & i've ran all the updates etc & will probably root it at some point.

i've got a nice cover for it but think i'll look for something a bit more rigid, if i can get some armor for it then it should be ok in my coat pocket or something, beyond that it'll be strictly staying in the truck where it will hopefully not be sat/stepped on.

love my XZ and this is what I did on the first day after i got my phone, just want to make sure it claims what it is


however, I have switched over to SGS4 as the XZ battery life is pretty bad for me.

Yeah, I agree android has more apps and great screen size, but no one can beat apple's quality and class. Iphone is best suited to business class who generally not indulge much with apps. Moreover, it is hard to find care center or repair center of any android related handset but is very easy to find good iphone screen repairs Mornington center easily.

I bought a sony xperia z3 yesterday for $850 outright.


So far I am happy with the performance and battery life - 2 days before you need to charge it, which is pretty good by smartphone standards. Compared to old phones though it is pretty meh

Looking forward to testing out the remote ps4 capabilities at some point when they get that feature working

Are you able to dial numbers with it? I tell Siri to fuck off all the time... she doesn't like it but she keeps coming back for more.

hahah that is one of the features I do believe. It also has a calculator - havnt checked to see if it is a scientific calculator though

If it's not, I'm sure there'll be an app on Android for something like that - enjoy the new tech Doc .
