Hey guys,

I was wondering if you could recommend a good easy-to-use tablet to take overseas and to keep for long-term as well? I'm a bit of a tech-newb, so any help would be much appreciated :D.

Hey Live :D.  I'm not really a tablet person, but if you like your current smartphone, I'd back going with the same OS - ie, if you're an iPhoner, hit up an iPad, if you're on Android then get an Android tablet, if you're on Windows Phone, then maybe a Surface.  I'm pretty sure these days you can link accounts between all of them, so sticking in the same ecosystem will make it easier.

Fraid I don't know anything about specs though.  I hear a lot of positive buzz about a Samsung something-or-other.  That may not be specific enough to be much use though .

High-end tablet? Mid-range or low?

I recommend the Xperia Z (Also water proof)

http://www.sonymobil...peria-tablet-z/

.....

Or the Nexus 7 (By google / Asus)which is smaller but also portable and you get good performance for the price.

http://www.google.com/nexus/7/

.....

Or the Galaxy Tab

http://www.samsung.c...10.1/index.html

.....

But if you dont like Android then go for iPad.

Thanks guys :D. I have a Sony Xperia SP phone and was thinking of looking into Samsung more or go all Sony. I'll have a look at the Nexus too. Mid-range ;).

If the purpose of the tablet is just for casual use while travelling then a tablet is good, but if you are thinking you might do any work then tablets just aren't good enough when sorting out emails/word documents

Some of the new small/lightweight laptops have pretty good specs so don't forget about them

Personally I like my Ipad 3 for casual use, but at times I wish I had spent more to buy a macbook air or something similar

I'd say it's good to always do a little research yourself so you yourself know what you're spending your money on. I'd personally go an iPad - but I'm a bit of a Macman.

Yeah I recommend either going for an iPad or an Android tablet.

If going for android then get either a Sony, Samsung or the Google Nexus. The rest of the brands aren't that great or reliable.

If you do have the money Xperia Z would be good, it's also Sony and PlayStation certified device and I can assume it'll play really nice with the PlayStation 4.

There is also a few games coming out next gen that makes use of tablets as second screen like battlefield 4 or the division.

i used to have both, ipad 3 and a Galaxy Tab, now only the ipad 3.
however, based on my apps, there are more apps on iOS. and if you uses an iphone now, all apps can be shared between your ios device.

where else the android tablet, i can ran custom OS (which sometimes make it un-stable - me to blame :P) but i loving it too. especially i can increase the size by just adding micro-SD.

now, when i travel, i bring my ipad and transfer pictures from my digital SLR onto it (backup) and when i come home, transfer everything back to my iMacs. :)

and since you are travelling to HKG, try and grab a bargain there :P

Thanks heaps for the tips guys. I've read up a lot on the Xperia Z and it sounds awesome - I think I'll ger one of those one day :D. But the Nexus 7 seems really good too and good value for money (in case we lose it), smaller and more portable for travelling, etc. Will read up on the Ipads and Samsung again later ;).

one more thing, samsung devices (like Note2, SGS4 (which what i have now)) true multi-tasking.

Yeah when it comes to portability and bang for your buck the Nexus 7 wins! The Xperia Z is awesome but a little too big for carrying around, also Sony might be releasing the next version of Xperia Z tablet soon too so might as well wait and think about it in the future if you still want one.

The multi-window thing in Samsung is cool ( i used it alot when i had my samsung) but its not limited to just samsung, its a software feature not hardware and there are alot of apps on the play store that can add multi-tasking to your phone.

if you're interested in android i gladly recommend the nexus 7.

i've got the 32gb model that's just been superseded.  the only things i can fault on it are that it has no back camera & no card slot.  beyond that the thing is absolutely brilliant.

live, another one for you to consider. Apple announces new iPad Air and iPad Mini (Retina) yesterday.

my girls and missus love their current ipad mini cause of the size, i'm stuck with the iPad3 due to mobile contract (which will be expiring soon).  iPad retina mini for me when my contact is up.
